A warm hello to all friends, family, and alumni! We hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and has fun plans to bring in 2010!

Seems I haven’t updated all of you in some time, my apologies. The second half of semester kept all of us plenty busy….and of course we found time to have some fun.

We had our sisterhood retreat earlier this semester. One sister’s family offered up their home to us, and we had a weenie roast and enjoyed hay rides.  We spent time with the horses, and around a campfire.  We had other sisters- including a paddle swap and a Christmas exchange.

We had our annual At Bat with the Sig Kaps and it was a great success! Thank you to all the Greek organizations that came out to play softball that day. A Big congrats to Delta Zeta for taking first out of the sororities A very special congratulations goes out to the Men of Delta Upsilon who, not only took first for the fraternities but didn’t let a single run get scored off them the entire day!  All of the money was donate to the Sigma Kappa foundation, which supports Alzheimer’s Research.

Since the last post we have initiated new women into our sisterhood. We are so happy to welcome them into our family. Congrats Stephanie Aimi, Coda Williamson, Megan Marshall, Meg Kross, Karley Hoffman, Alex Morgano, Ashley McCabe,  and Cassandra Smith.  The girls enjoyed their I-week and big sister reveals, and got initiated in November. We have a few girls who have started their promise program and are looking to get initiated in the spring. The same day as initiation we celebrated Founders Day. Our Vice President of Alumni Relations, Mara Hammond, made us a great homemade dinner and we spent time learning about our founders and spending time getting to know each other.

We had our formal this semester, themed “One Night in Paris.” We spent the night having dinner, drinks, and dancing. We also enjoyed a dry social with the men of Theta Xi. We had a “Silver Screen” theme, where members of both houses dressed up as famous t.v. Couples and competed in a t.v. trivia contest before spending the night getting to know each other.

We had our elections for the upcoming year. We also had our senior wills at el Ranch and had a senior night out and sadly said goodbye to those girls leaving us! Congrats to Devin and Farrell on graduation and we wish them the best of luck. Also congrats to Jenn who got an internship for Disney. We also celebrated Brandy’s engagement and threw a great Bachelorette party for her! We wish her and her fiancé the best of luck and happiness.

That was just some of our fun for the past few months. We are really looking forward to a New Year and a New Semester. We have several things coming up quickly in the spring semester, including Greek Week, Our Ultra Violet philanthropy, Parents weekend, and a whole lot more! So keep an eye out for Sigma Kappa!

If you are interested in learning more about Sigma Kappa and joing a sorority, we are looking to have a spring class. Feel free to contact us at sigmakappa@wiu.edu.

Have a safe and happy new Year!

Sigma Kappa Blog: 1st of the new year

September 22nd, 2009.

Hello Sisters, alumni, friends, and visitors.

We hope everyone enjoyed their summer. Now that school is back into swing the women of Sigma Kappa are pretty busy. We just got done with recruitment and would like to welcome all of our baby doves into our sisterhood. They have just started their new member program, which is always exciting! They just got their heart sisters, our mentoring program to help new members meet more women in the chapter and be involved.

We’ve have been very busy with recruitment but we’ve managed to sneak in some fun as well. Sigma Kappa’s had our work week before school, which was full of sisterhoods and competitions!  We also helped out with Move in Crew and 6 pack as school started. We also celebrated our Bid day with our new members and had an 1920’s Mafia/Casino themed, complete with our own black jack table! We participated in Western’s annual Mud Volleyball and Delta Tau Delta’s Big wheel event.

We have been busy planning out our semester. We have a sisterhood retreat coming up. We are planning to have hay rides, a weenie roast, and hopefully some horse back riding!

We are also had our first social of the semester a dinner with the men of the vets club.  We are quickly approaching homecoming and are very excited. This years homecoming is going to include Rocky’s boat Regatta, Variety Show, Yell Like Hell, a cooking contest, the float contest, dec the campus, dec the town, and a flag decorating competition. This year’s theme is “Around the World.” With homecoming we are also having a tailgating event with our alumnae, along with a breakfast before the parade.

We had our first Sigma Kappa library night in efforts to meet our GPA goal.

We have several other events coming up. We are planning our Founders Day in November along with initiation. We are planning our sisterhoods for the rest of the semester, a new member social, and getting ready to participate in campus events like Big Pink Volleyball, and Greek events like Sigma Chi’s Derby Days and Pike Spike. We also have socials with the Men of Theta Xi and Sigma Chi on our Calendar.

Our Fall philanthropy, At Bat with the Sigma Kaps is coming up on Oct 3rd. We’re hoping everybody can come out and join us!  We have also been continuing with our adopt a solider program and hope to be expanding that soon.

We also just got a few updates on our house over the summer. We got a brand new shed, a new washer and dryer, and we also got a brand new flat screen t.v… We are obviously most excited about the t.v! It makes movie nights at the house much better then before.

We also got the fun experience of meeting our sisters from another chapter. We got to hang out with some of the women from the Alpha Epsilon chapter of Sigma Kappa from Iowa State! We had so much fun with them and hope to visit again this semester.

That is all for now. We’re almost to the half waypoint of the semester! Look out for another blog soon!

Sigma Kappa Blog

April 28th, 2009

Letter from the Webmaster:  Hello everyone! The end of the semester is approaching. I wanted to update everyone on what the ladies of Sigma Kappa have been up to and our up and coming plans.

Socials: Since the last blog Sigma Kappa has had a few socials. One was  at the Forum with the men of Sigma Pi. The social was 70’s and 80’s themed and our women had a blast dressing up. We also had a cookout in the park with our Greek Week partners. We also just had a dry social with the men of the Veterans club.

Welcome: The Delta Sigma Chapter just initiated 5 women into our chapter. Congratulations to our newest sisters: Stephenie Mateika, Morgan Joesph, Morgan Hoyle, Leah Van Alstine, and Amy Kohen! We also want to welcome our two new members who are to be initiated this Saturday: Laura Goshgarian, and Jenna Hayes

Greek Week: Greek week is finally over and everyone had a blast. We placed 1st in Opening ceremonies, 3rd in the  Can Castle contest, and 3rd in raising the most money for relay for life! We are also very proud to be apart of a bigger picture this year. As a greek community this year we raised over 200 lbs in pop tabs to be donated to Ronald McDonald House and over 2,000 canned goods to be donated to our local food pantry. Also, this year as a community Western raised over $30,000 for Relay for Life. Sigma Kappa raised over 2,000 dollars alone!  Also with Greek week, we wanted to thank the men of Alpha Gamma Rho, Theta Xi, and Lambda Theta Phi for being awesome partners! We had a lot of fun getting to know them.

Sisterhoods: Since the last blog, we had a spring paddle swap exchange. We also had our sisterhood retreat. We played relay races and games with our newest members! We also had trust games and other exercises. Also this semester, several sisters have received their lavalieres from their big sisters including Kara McCormick, Mollie Schmeling,  Mara Hammond, and Devin Wilcoxen.

Special Events: This month we had our Parents weekend. We spent all weekend welcoming our families into our Sigma Kappa family. We had a BBQ in the park with games, a movie in our chapter room, and a dinner with our families that included a mom’s pinning. We also had a farewell breakfast with our families.

We also had our 50th celebration, which was a huge success! Past Sigma Kappa members from the last 5 decades came back to celebrate with us. We really enjoyed hearing all the old stories, going through pictures, and meeting our older sisters and we hope all of our Alumnae had fun as well. Special Thanks to Mara Hammond for putting the weekend together and all the alumnae who came to visit the chapter!

Philanthropy: This spring we held our first annual Sigma Kapture the flag contest to raise money for our national philanthropy; Alzheimer’s research. Congrats to the men of Tau Kappa Epislon for taking first place. Thank you to all those who participated and donated, we really appreciated the support.

We will also be doing our Adopt-a-street project this Sunday.

We also just started a new program called “Adopt-a-solider”. One of our new initiates has a boyfriend serving over seas and has helped us set up a pen pal program. Some of our members have been paired with soldiers currently serving over seas to become Pen Pals and send care packages to them. We are all excited to send our first letters this week.

Accomplishments:

We are proud to say we just found out we logged the most community service hours per member last semester out of all 6 sororities! We had 20 hours per member. For this semester, we have already logged over 1,000 hours! Special Acknowledgments go to Mollie Schmeling for logging over 400 hours personally, and Kaye Sundquist and Lacey O’Brien for logging over a 100 hours each!

This year at the Greek awards, Sigma Kappa took home an honorable mention for our Scholarship program. We also are very proud of Farrell Lowers, who took home the honor of being named “Chapter Member of the Year”,

Up and Comming: This week our seniors are becoming alumnae and we are holding Senior Wills this Thursday at parkside.

Sigma Kappa Blog

Letter From the Webmaster:

Hello alumni, sisters, and general friends of Sigma Kappa! I’m the Webmaster and I wanted to try something new. Instead of trying to update this site with everything we have going on in real time, I thought putting a blog up might make it easier for you all! That way you can read one or two articles a month and find out all the fun we have been having here at WIU! Important events (Like our up and Coming 50th) will still be updated on a regular basis! So enjoy the first Delta Sigma Blog! Feed back is welcome

What we’ve been up to:

The first 2 months of the semester can be a busy one in the Sigma Kappa household! We have held a few recruitment events already this semester, including a “Sig Kaps in the city”  one where we served mock tails.  Our next recruitment event is going to be held on March 10th, from 6-8 pm at the Sigma Kappa house. The next day will be an open house, which is open to all students and faculty on campus! We look forward to seeing everyone there!

We just had a Game night sisterhood that included a cookout on our deck.

We are very excited about our newest batch of baby doves! They are more then halfway through their new member program. Their initiation will be on April 5th! The new members have picked their top 3 big sisters, and are anxiously waiting to find
who will be there big sister. This semester we are trying to have 2 new member classes, so the girls are looking forward to welcoming even more new women into our sisterhood.

Sigma Kappa just found out our Greek week partners for this year. We are very excited to be paired with Alpha Gamma Rho, Theta Xi, Lambda Theta Phi, and Lambda Theta Alpha. Practices for V-show and other activities should be starting soon. We are in it to win it this year since we just took 3rd in Homecoming! Let the games begin! This year’s theme is a “Beach Theme”

Our philanthropy and foundation chairs are eagerly planning our Ultra Violet Days. This is our new spring philanthropy, and this is our first semester trying it out! We will keep everyone posted as we get information

Our VPAR has been busy planning our 50th anniversary! We are excited to be hearing some positive feedback from our alumni. If you are alumni and have not received your invitation, please email ml-hammond@wiu.edu with your current address. Some of the actives have started a pen pal system with our alumni. If you’re interested please contact Mara Hammond at ml-hammond@wiu.edu

We learned we were third in grades last semester and above the all women’s average. Great job ladies!

Last semester’s events:

Since this is a new blog I would like to catch you up on last semester’s events really fast. Sigma Kappa placed 3rd in homecoming with our partners Tau Kappa Epsilon and Phi Mu Alpha! We had a dry social with TKE and Phi Mu Alpha to get to know them. We also had a sports themed social with the men of Delta Upsilon. We had several sisterhoods including Laser tag, a Halloween costume potluck, a paddle swap and gift exchange. We had our annual At Bat with the Sig Kips tournament, where Sig Tau Gamma took 1st and 2nd place this year. All the money went to Alzheimer’s research, along with the money we raised for Memory Walk. We had a cookout sisterhood, and celebrated founder’s day. We participated in Sigma Chi’s derby days; AGS’s eating contest, Delta Upsilon’s teeter totter event, Delta Zeta’s turtle tug, Alpha Gamma Rho’s smoking hog, among others.
